Opportunity House
Founded in 1989, Opportunity House is a psychosocial program located at 350 Capers Ave. in Jackson. Operated by Mississippi State Hospital’s Community Services Division, Opportunity House offers individuals with serious mental illness a chance to learn and strengthen skills they can use to live independently. The program is based on a rehabilitative clubhouse model in which participants, known as “members,” are involved in productive activities that teach teamwork, build self-esteem and provide support. Centered on a work-ordered day, members are responsible for preparation of daily snacks and meals, performance of various clerical procedures, outreach to absent members and custodial care of the facility. Members who are successful in these activities are eligible for entering the Transitional Employment Program (TEP) which provides opportunities for members to return to the job market in a gradual and minimally stressful environment.
